Very Good But Not Failsafe
IMO there is no such thing as a totally reliable marine bilge pump float switch but this switch is a cut above the rest. The marine environment [wet, damp, corrosive] and conditions between and during use [pounding, vibration, temperature variations etc.] pose a challenge for any mechanical device. The poor old float switch ends up living in or under filthy, oily water, with everything from leaves, sand and rusting fishhooks for companions. Add to that our tendency to set it and forget it until it fails which does not help it either. And when it does fail the consequences are potentially serious. A swamped boat [if it fails to come on] or a dead battery [if it fails to shut off]. I like the Attwood because the float body is fully encased inside the cover, so items won't fall on the float and prevent it from moving freely. It also has a set of grills on either side to allow water to move into the float chamber but prevents larger debris like leaves and twigs from sloshing into contact with the float and interfering with its ability to turn on or off. I also like the manual switch on the side which lets you test the functioning of the switch and the bilge pump each time you use the boat. I also like the fact that Attwood has left the mounting hole structure the same over a long period of time so that when the time does come to replace the switch you won't have to make a new mounting bracket for it. Take this switch out of the bilge as part of your winter maintenance to prevent it from becoming encased in ice which may be in the bilge over winter. Clean it at the same time. Make sure to put a quality heat shrink tube on all the electrical connections and use marine grade connectors for long trouble free life.

Perfect Replacement Float Switch
This was an exact replacement switch so it fit perfectly, works as it should. The original was 16yrs old and was pretty mucked up with algae. Hope to get the same durability from this one. I added the correct waterproof electrical connector to the end of the wires provided in the kit so it would connect to my boat's wire harness rather than cutting and splicing.

Attwood float switch with cover
Float switch is nice and works as advertised. It is a bit heavy and the cover does come off if you wanted to just use the switch without the cover- there are two bolts on the side only. if you install it with the cover the bolts go on top. I am not happy with this float switch only because it activates/engages the bilge pump on very high level. About two inches + to click. That is very high on a boat, as the surface inside a boat could be very spread and at two inches of water spread in a 27 foot boat for example, can mean 20+ gallons of water prior to kicking the bilge pump. The float switch sits 2/5 inches higher than the base level. once it's engaged and it comes down, it disengages the pump when at 1 inch from the base level..so you technically already have an inch of water staying in no matter how close to the hull you install this thing. I used some foam and glue to make for the difference. Overall a good switch need to check how it holds this season. Bought this with a 1200 gph Attwood bilge pump

Automatic is the way to go
We received this and installed it in our boat and have been very pleased. We have had other switches that were tripped by a switch on the outside when water would reach a certain level in the boat well. These are great because of the switch which is located in the bottom. Those with the switch on the outside tend to get hung up on debris or stop working. This has been a load off our minds especially when we get the torrential rains of the Caribbean and don't have to worry about whether or not the float switch is turning on the pump.

Nice try, but not reliable
I bought this float switch to replace an old float switch that had failed, the kind that had mercury in it. The Attwood float switch doesn't have mercury, it's a purely mechanical switch action. I bought this version, with the cover, because my boat's bilge is crowded with hoses, and the cover would protect the float from any interference. It installed easily, and initially seemed to work OK. However, there were a few times when I visited my boat and found the water level in the bilge to be high enough to activate the float switch, but for some reason the float switch hadn't activated. After about a year, this had happened often enough that I decided I couldn't trust the Attwood float switch, so I removed it and replaced it with a different brand float switch, which seems to work fine. Once I took the Attwood out, I tried it out in a bucket of water. Mechanically, the float switch still worked, and the electrical contacts still worked. The problem was that there is a slight mechanical resistance, right when the float is trying to activate the switch, and the amount of flotation provided by the float is sometimes not enough to overcome this mechanical resistance. So what happens is the the water level continues to increase, but the float doesn't go any higher (it is "stuck"), and the switch circuit is never actuated to run the bilge pump. If the water in the bilge sloshed around, it's very likely that the float switch would get enough of a push to work every time. But if the water is calm and rises slowly, it's possible that the float switch won't work when it's needed. This is not caused by air being trapped under the cover. There is a small vent hole in the highest part of the cover, but this can get clogged by bilge gunk. I had already drilled out the vent hole to enlarge it, so no air could get trapped under the cover. So overall, the design is a nice try, but the unit is not reliable enough for something as important as a bilge pump float switch.

Works good. Needs vent hole in the top off the cover but I just drilled them myself. That's the only reason for 4 stars. No issues with it so far. Got caught in a torrential downpour the other day, boat started filling with water, and pump kicked on automatically. Long-term functionality can't be accounted for since it has only needed to work one time.

About to sink my boat with this switch
Bought this in 2021. The switch failed, and the pump won't start. As you see in the pictures, the water damage was extensive. As soon as I removed the cover, the switch started working. The cover created a bubble of air inside and will not allow the switch to go any higher. Bad design to don't have any hole in the top for the air to escape. It was working initially with the cover on, but in time the highness where the switch will engage has changed. Don't buy this switch, is not worth the damage that you can have due to just a little malfunction of a poorly designed switch...

Failing after 6 months
Worked well for 6 months, then not shutting off anymore. Draining the battery by constantly running the bilge pump. Luckily I caught it on time before I lost my boat. Do yourself a favor and buy something else.
