Freud quality
I purchased this item to drill holes for dowels with my drill press. The selling point was that it is carbide tipped with a brad point. Since I use a lot of "exotic" hardwoods that are hard on cutters, the carbide was a big plus for me. Also, it drills a relatively flat bottom hole, though not as well as a Forstner bit. The flute length, and thus, cutting depth is rather limited at only 1.375" (approx.). One *VERY* important fact, which wasn't listed in the description and isn't visible in the picture, is that there is a flat part on the entire length of the shank about 5/16" wide. This turned out not to be a problem for me because the chuck on my drill is 1/2" and the jaws just clear the flat spot. However, if your drill has a smaller capacity it probably won't work. This item is made for boring machines so that is clearly the reason for it, and thankfully I was able to adapt it for use in a drill press. I'm not sure how long it will last but it is certain to last longer than carbon or high speed steel drill bits.
