Fun, no color variety

Did this with my nephews and they loved the activity. Only disappointment is that all of the crystals were clear in the kit, it would have been nice to have some color variety. Since these are lab made you think they could ensure you don't get geodes of all the same colors.

Excellent!

My granddaughter loves smashing rocks with me, so thought this would be a fun thing for us to do. Cracking the geodes open isn't easy, but well work the work. And figuring out the best way to crack them and slowly moving around the rock to make the "path" of how it would open was eventually fun. The end product was all geodes that cracked pretty well and look great!

Kids enjoyed breaking them! They wore their goggles & it took quite a bit of pounding with a hammer, but that’s the fun!

Nice kit if you get good geodes.

I had bought 2 of these for Holiday gifts. One set for my niece/nephew and one set for my kids. We had did my kids set after opening in the morning and about 4 of the geodes were just rocks. Went to my family's house and helped my niece and nephew break into theirs and they got one that was just a rock. My kids were pretty disappointed that almost half of their geodes were just rocks, but still a fun experience. My kids set had nicer looking geodes overall, so I guess have to take the win where you can.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

This is a perfect gift for kids who love rocks. It does require some patience and a hammer with adult assistance and supervision. It’s pretty cool to try and break the rocks to get a good shape and they are very pretty once opened up. Does require a little cleanup but this can easily be an outside project.

Great value

Super fun project for my son and I got some good quality sparkly rocks. Only downside is they were 90% plain white quartz. One had a a quarter size smoky quartz and another had a small portion that was tinted just the lightest shade of purple. Still super pretty though!

Fun Unique Experience

This is the first time I purchased geodes. It was a fun experience cracking open the geodes with the kids. Two of them turned out very nice, clean and sparkly inside. The other two is very dull looking. We put the geodes in a clear sandwich bag before hammering to avoid the rock pieces from scattering everywhere.

Good fun for 8 year old, especially if you manage expectations

The geodes were an ok size and we were able to break them open with a normal claw hammer, it's a little old school with a wooden handle which was nicer than the full metal/rubber grip hammer I had There was some slight variation in the crystals from cloudy to clear, and in shape. I told my son that they'd all be the same so he was quite interested in the differences. It makes sense that they cannot test for colour. Some were basically rocks, sadly it was the pink ones which had primed us to think they were special. These did have a different heft. Obviously whoever is selling these could devise a test for if they are crystal geodes or not using displacement/weight but they don't which is what drops the value for money. There were enough that by the end my son was swinging that hammer like a pro and shattering them

Not recommended for kids

It's definitely not for kids to explore lol. I had to help my son he's 12 and it was even hard for me to smash open. Careful when you do as there's flying objects.
