Pilot won't stay lit. / 4.15.2023 NOW IT DOES!
EDIT; 4/15/23: Contacted product support and they sent me two parts to replace. When replaced, this works like a charm. Very happy with support. Quick to respond. Booger works like a charm now. Puts out a lot of heat. So simple a cave man could do it! Previous Revue: Very happy to have received my new Big Buddy Heater. Installed two new propane canisters and 4 "D" cell batteries. Big Buddy had a battery compartment and a red rocker switch, assumed it has a fan. The fan never came on when I flipped the switch. I don't know if it has a fan in it... Tried to light the pilot and it would light fine. But when I released the pilot button it went out. Tried numerous times holding the pilot button down as long as five minutes. Five minutes is a long time to hold that button down. The pilot stayed lit once. That was when I tilted the unit 45 degrees over to the right to get more pilot flame on the thermocouple for several minutes while holding the pilot button down. It stayed lit that one time while I cycled it through low, medium, and high. Bugger puts out plenty of heat for sure. Never got the pilot to light again even after letting the heater and my attitude cool down. Photo of pilot was taken while holding the pilot button down to show that the flame is just barely licking the thermocouple. This should be enough to actuate the thermocouple, but it doesn't. Second item: The right door stays shut without a bottle in it. With a bottle in it, it will shut but pops back open within minutes on its own. Its in a little bind with the bottle when a bottle is installed and pops back open. Left door does fine. This didn't arrive ready to use, and I didn't buy it to start working on it out of the box to get it to work well.

Works great for what it is, but understand its limitations
I purchased the Big Buddy heater in October 2011 as an emergency heater (we were in the early part of a snowstorm-induced 5 day power/heat outage). It works with those disposable 1lb propane tanks; I also purchased the quick-connect hose adapter to allow me to connect it to a standard "grill sized" 20lb propane tank (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UC7966) I used this heater for indoor emergency heat during that October 2011 outage, and again this year during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, when we were without power / heat for two weeks (and again, treated to a snowstorm). Have not used this heater for regularly heating my home, or for any other purpose such as heating a garage, heating any outdoor area, etc. So my review is based on use as a residential heating appliance in emergency situations. In my experience, this heater performs very well, and I can't think of anything that I think needs to be changed or improved. It's lightweight, portable, and reliable. It puts out a good amount of heat, and functions well as a room heater in our old, drafty house. I did not detect any odor or fumes when using the heater. Nonetheless, as with any non-vented combustible heater, one must be careful because ALL such heaters will output carbon monoxide, and you need to make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in the room you will be using it. I prefer to use this heater with the 1lb disposable propane bottles (the heater uses two of them at a time). It makes the heater much more portable. But more importantly, I have come to understand that it is very dangerous to bring a 20lb propane tank indoors, because of the risk of leakage (propane is a gas that is heavier than air, and it will invisibly pool on the floor and could ignite if it encounters a source of ignition, such as a gas stove pilot light, or a furnace pilot light, etc.) I had never realized the lingering danger that propane presents to indoor use. Outside, or in certain indoor locations that have lots of venhilation, such as barns, sheds, etc., you can count on the fact that the propane will dissipate before it becomes a danger; the same is not true in most residential houses. In truth, even a 1lb bottle of propane can be a risk indoors, it's just a lesser risk due to the lesser amount of potential leakage. It's no fault of the heater, it's just a fact with propane as a fuel source, and one must really understand this when making decisions about these types of heaters. By contrast, with something like a kerosene heater, you sometimes hear comments about how it might smell (I think mostly this is due to either a faulty or old heater, or improper operation/maintenance). But at least with kerosene, it will not give off vapors that can spontaneously ignite and explode, and you can be pretty sure that, so long as you are following proper procedure and refueling outdoors when the heater is cool etc., it's not going to explode on you. Propane is, in my opinion, a more dangerous indoor fuel, because you are at possible risk of mechanical failures (e.g. leaking valves on even the 1lb propane bottles, or some internal leak in the heater). I would not run either a propane or a kerosene heater at night while I'm sleeping. Anyway, taking into consideration the above points about propane, the Big Buddy heater does what it's supposed to do, and does it very well. With two 1lb bottles of propane attached, we could use it to heat up the kitchen in the AM to take the chill off, have breakfast, and get the kids dressed. Then I would turn off the heater, store it outside (just in case it started leaking), and bring it back inside in the evenings to use for a few hours when the house started getting cold after the sun went down, to eat dinner and get the kids ready for bed. I would run it mostly on high or medium, and that's enough to heat a large room in our drafty old house. Using the heater in this manner, I would burn two 1 lb bottles per day. As a short term fuel, the 1lb bottles are great. But as a longer-term fuel source, it would be expensive. I do have the connector hose to connect it to the 20lb tank, which works great and I have done that a few times (leaving the 20 lb tank outside on the porch and leaving the door open a crack to allow the hose into the house to connect to the heater). But the more I learned about propane, the more hesitant I became about using it like this, even with the tank outside. My concern is a leak somewhere along the rubber hose, or again, maybe somewhere within the heater, and connected to a 20lb tank that could dump a lot of propane inside the house that could ignite if it lingers and finds a source of ignition. I wouldn't hesitate to use this heater outdoors or in any of those garage/barn type of situations, where it would be great and you wouldn't have the same concerns about leaking propane. I'm giving this 5 stars because I do think this heater performs great for its intended purpose. It's far superior to a kerosene heater in terms of its portability and transport for things like outdoor sporting activities, etc. It's clean (as clean as it can be anyway), reliable heat. But I wrote all of the concerns I had about the fuel source generally, so that one could make an informed purchase decision. For an emergency home heater, I also picked up a kerosene heater. It's good to have two options, as fuel can be difficult to find (as I found out during our 2 week outage!) and those of us without a lot of outdoor storage space would have difficulty safely storing enough propane (I don't have a garage or shed, where I would preferably store the propane, so I keep it in one of those weatherproof plastic outdoor boxes you can buy for gardens supplies etc.).

A nice little heater.
I like that the heater isn't too heavy for me to move around throughout the house. With the LPG canisters installed, the heater is still very portable. I have a backroom that is mostly unheated and this little heater has allowed me to use that room no-matter how cold it gets outside. Additionally I bought the two fuel hoses and two fuel filters to connect to 25 gallon tanks so that the run time last for many hours. ( over 100 hrs. on low setting if I'm remembering correctly ) If you get the hoses, buy the Mr. Heater brand hoses because they don't shed oil under pressure which could clog the aluminum tubes and require invasive maintenance. I think most people would be quite satisfied with this heater. Now it most likely won't heat an entire house but heating rooms and large tents shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually considering buying a spare because this heater is used so much.

This is a heater
This thing is a beast. It eats the one pound cylinders like m&m's. Buy the hose/regulator, quick connect and hook it up to a 20lb cylinder. This heater has the ability to run you out of whatever room you hibernate in during the winter.

Works well in the Canadian winter!
I've been heating the garage with a microfurnace for years. By heating I mean taking the chill out of the air. that finally died so I bought this heater. I should have done this years ago. After letting it run for an hour I no longer needed a coat on and it was -20c outside. It does use a fair bit of propane on high but it does the job I need and propane is not expensive. For the first time in the dead of winter I was able to spend hours working on my car without freezing. I did spend the extra and purchased the Mr Heater hose so I could connect it to a 20lb propane bottle which in my opinion is well worth it (at in the end will end up paying for itself in saved propane costs)

Super Fast Delivery
Excellent Product, Keeps my 1000 sq.ft. cabin nice and warm . Ran well ,right out of the box. Easy 1 or 2 click pilot,Worked well on all 3 heat settings and the small blower/fan was adequate to keep the warm air moving I am VERY satisfied with this product and was TOTALLY AMAZED at the speed at which Amazon delivered it. (2 Days ) I own a 18,000 Btu. kerosene heater,,which works well,,but the COST of the fuel is prohibitive,( $15 a gal.) as opposed to propane ( $1 a lb.) I LOVE this product and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone ,,a MUST have in case of power shortages ,winter camping,or ice fishing . I also purchased the 6 volt power adapter and the Mr.heater Hose with regulator and Quick disconnect

Do it. You know you want to.
If I had to use 1 word to summarize my experience with this unit, I would say Fantastic, or maybe Wonderful, or possibly even Amazing. It is -30 outside right now. I am using this currently to heat up the box of a cube truck. The box is 18ft by 8 ft, which is 144 sq ft. I expected this unit to take some time to heat up and then maintain the space effectively. Within 40 minutes I was able to remove my coat and wear only a t-shirt. I should mention that the rear doors on the box do not seal properly, and as such there is a considerable amount of cold air still coming in. You dont feel it. Its just so nice and warm. Wonderfully amazing :)
