a good convenient short pencil

I bought this last year after searching for a "mechanical pencil" for a gift; it was one of the top results, I thought, "hey, cool, built-in sharpener!" and it wasn't until it arrived that I went... "why does a mechanical pencil need a sharpener?" (Clearly my brain's dull.) So I was kind of annoyed it was just a regular old pencil with a heavy sharpener cap. I tossed it into my supply box and moved on. Then I needed a pencil for a small watercolor kit, in a case that's too short for a blackwing or even a regular pencil. This is a good pencil that works like a pencil should (smooth, dark, always ready to write), and it's short enough to fit in literally any pencil case I own. And the kids don't seem to realize it's a pencil sharpener, so they don't run off with it (I've lost maybe 8 in the last six months that way). The sharpener works fine for colored pencil and watercolor pencil, too. It is not a "must buy" (a regular pencil sharpened down + a cheap freebie sharpener would fit the same niche) but I lost mine on a trip and I'm rebuying it because I miss the convenience of having it in my kit and the heft. Look around for a good deal, I paid $11 and it was tolerable but I wouldn't pay $16 or $20.

Excellent idea

My grand kids write and do art. These have been well used. Got them as Christmas gifts and they are still being used. Even from the 4 year old.

Handy Gadget, Pencil... Ehhh

Love the pencil extender and built in sharpener. Looks sleek and functions well. My only gripe is the pencil that came with it stains my hand green every time I use it. I'm hoping it's just the pencil part and not the extender so I can keep using this with unpainted pencils in the future.

I needed something to protect my pencil led on the go, and this works. sharpener is good. the pencil is short but seems good. over all its a good product, but could be 2 dollars less.

To me faber castell makes the best drawing pencils , I would skip this and get the nice small tin set and buy there brand pencil extender , this build is odd to me since I know they can use nicer plastic ,there pencil extender is solid and looks nice , this does have a sharper built in , it what made me want to get it , but I just feel they missed a beat on the build , maybe they will revisit and use the same material as the extender , I am very pro this brand pencils , I even gift them to art friends and say yiu have to try these out ,

A pencil with a cap. Who'd have thought? And the cap is a sharpener? This is a freaking awesome idea. Faber Castell just makes such awesome products. I don't love their mechanical pencil (I just find the grip a bit slippery compared to rotring), but this thing is just the bee's knees. The sharpener is awesome, the cap keeps the point of your pencil safe, and the pencil it comes with is just spectacular (though it is a little short for some reason) Overall if you're super picky about making sure you always have a pencil with a fresh point, this thing's awesome. If you aren't familiar with Faber Castell, they make some of the best writing instruments on earth. The FC Loom is one of the most well regarded fountain pens made, at any price point, and they sell stuff down to consumer level like this, all the way up to $3000-5000 fountain pens. So you're always getting quality with FC

great idea for pencil lovers

The pencil extender is an ingenious idea. It makes the pencil easy to carry. While the more expensive metal versions seem crazy, the plastic version which I bought for less than $20, was a good deal. I enjoy it much. I gave 5-stars on this review for the extender with sharpener built-in and forgave the over-pricedness and over-hype for the pencils themselves. I felt the pencil itself is nice, and enjoy writing with it the more I use it. My friends and family who tried it thought it was too soft an preferred the cheaper pencils which have more friction. When I write with a Ticonderoga pencil, I can understand why they feel that way - the Faber Castells may be "perfect" but perfection is too expensive. The extender does fit with other pencils. A full length pencil does feel a bit off balance but it works and capping the graphite so that it does not stain other stuff is worth it. So I may just do that when the single pencil becomes too short unless the Faber-Castell 9000's Perfect Pencils go on sale.

Great pencil. As mentioned in another review the actual pencils you add are short, but this is to create balance, so that it is not top-heavy. It is in this regard very well designed, nice balance; also has a great look and feel and is a great alternative to my mechanical pencils as a portable lead writing instrument.
